DOF and Rule of thirds

DSLR

Many cameras have the capabilities to adjust your focus manually this makes achieving depth of field fairly easy. Switch the lens to MF Manual Focus so you can choose whats in focus

Try the AV mode. Which is aperture priority. This lets you adjust the aperture and the camera decides on a shutter speed.

If you are working with a point and shoot camera it gets a little more difficult.

What you need to know for your point and shoot.
If you don't understand apertures or focal lengths, that's fine because you really don't need to for this. What you should find out, though, is the focusing range for your camera. More specifically, how closely the lens can focus at its widest position (fully zoomed out) and its telephoto position (fully zoomed in).
-A point and shoot camera can usually focus at a 2inch DOF at its closest.
-Do you have a MACRO mode? The button symbol is usually a flower.OR you may have a scene option.
-The closer you get to your subject the better off you will be
-Gaussian Blur in Photoshop..
-If you have portrait mode you can use it but not for every image.
